Fitness and exercise: Get active to stay younger

13 MAY 2008

Regular aerobic exercise could delay the effects of ageing by up to 12 years, slowing and even reversing deteriorating muscle strength and coordination and prolonging physical independence later in life, according to a study in the British Journal Of Sports Medicine. Without regular aerobic exercise fitness levels decrease, leading to aerobic power halving by the age of 60 making everyday activities intolerably exhausting. The study explored the theory that one of the most important factors in maintaining quality of life in later years is maintaining sufficient aerobic power. Results suggest the need for exercising for at least 30 minutes a day five times a week.
