Skincare: Is your water too hard for your skin?

Skincare: Is your water too hard for your skin?

12 SEPTEMBER 2008

If your shower unit surfaces are dulled by chalky residue, it means your local water is hard, which dries skin and dulls hair. Make sure you use products to counteract the effects, alternating between deep-cleansing and nourishing, moisturising haircare and hydrating, replenishing or oily skin cleansers (oil acts as a barrier, preventing water getting in and moisture getting out – if you find your skin is super-dry, apply a body oil before you even get into the shower*). And slather on plenty of rich moisturiser afterwards to help rehydrate skin depleted by your water.

*Oils will also provide a barrier to self-tan, so avoid if you're planning on bronzing up later.
