The Welsh athlete - who stands six feet tall, or "six foot two inches with the hair," he says - has brought a touch of the Beckham factor to the world of rugby. If he does sign up to represent Brylcreem, he will be following in the footsteps of the England skipper

Keeping your hair in place is no easy task amid the rough and tumble of competitive rugby, but Welsh ace Gavin Henson has mastered the art and is about to clinch a major deal promoting men's styling products.

The 23-year-old, who is dating opera sensation Charlotte Church, has provoked interest from several leading companies. And although the hunky athlete says he generally uses Dax hair gel, industry insiders say Brylcreem is likely to win the bidding war. Appearing in advertisements for the British firm will confirm Gavin's reputation as "the David Beckham of rugby" as the England skipper has also represented them.

There don't seem to be any sour grapes, though: representatives from Dax say they are just happy the Welshman saw fit to use their gel in the first place. "We feel very honoured to have such a great athlete like Gavin Henson using our products," said a spokesman. "We have been in discussion with his management in the UK, but we're not sure if we can compete financially for his signature."

Gavin, who first shot to fame after winning the Young Player of the Year Award in 2001, has brought a touch of well-groomed glamour to the world of rugby. Known for his spiky hairstyle, tanned glow and waxed legs, the centre has become a regular fixture at red carpet events.
