While Patrick Swayze's swivelling hips and classic lines like "Nobody puts Baby in a corner" made 1987's Dirty Dancing a chick-flick favourite, one of the film's most romantic moments has helped it top a poll of the best movie scenes in history.

The segment in which Patrick's character Johnny lifts Baby, played by Jennifer Grey, over his head during a dance lesson in a lake was voted number one in a survey of 1,200 film lovers.

Patrick and Jennifer's watery move beat out Indiana Jones' one-shot duel with a swordsman in 1981's Raiders Of The Lost Ark and the space creature exploding from John Hurt's stomach in the 1979 sci-fi classic Alien.

The top five was nearly entirely made up of Eighties-era films. One exception was a fight sequence from the Matrix which came in at number five, just behind Richard Gere sweeping Debra Winger off her feet in 1982's An Officer And A Gentleman.

"The 1980s were always underrated, so it's good to see them getting the credit they deserve," said a spokesperson at Sony Ericsson, which sponsored the poll.

Dirty Dancing's squeaky clean mid-lake dance lesson might seem a bit of a damp squib to some, but it sailed in at number one in a poll of the best movie scenes in history
