After 13 years of marriage, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr still understand the importance of date night. The pair, who met in 1997 and have two children, spent Monday evening enjoying some quality alone time.

"Sometimes even parents need a #DateNight Up past ten pm #PartyAnimals Married almost 13 years and still enjoying each other's company," Sarah, 37, captioned a sweet selfie of herself and Freddie, which she posted on Instagram.

Sarah and Freddie, who starred in TV drama 24, are parents to five-year-old Charlotte Grace, who was born in September 2009, and son Rocky, two, who was born in 2012.

They met on the set of horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1997, with Sarah playing high school beauty queen Helen and Freddie portraying Ray, who romanced Jennifer Love Hewitt's Julie.

Two weeks ago the Prinzes celebrated Freddie's birthday - and Sarah, who is a regular Instagram user, sent a sweet message to Freddie over the picture-sharing site.

"Happy birthday to this guy @RealFPJ Thank you for showing me dreams are possible, and being the best partner a girl could ever have (esp on #InternationalWomensDay)" wrote the star, who found fame in the 1990s as the titular character in cult TV show Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

The pair waited for many years before starting a family, and in 2009 – shortly before announcing her first pregnancy – Sarah revealed why.

"When we do have children, my husband and I will have such a strong foundation because we’ve given our relationship time to grow," she told Access Hollywood.

"I try to go into everything with an open mind, but it’s much more than I thought it would be. The partnership grows to such a different level. And all my life, it was just my mom and me, us against the world; so to let someone else in and to have another partner was hard for me.

"Now he’s my partner, my best friend, and my husband."
