Cuba Gooding Jr. settles sexual assault case ahead of trial – details

The Jerry Maguire star was accused of an incident that took place a decade ago

Cuba Gooding Jr. has reportedly settled a civil sexual assault case that was set to take place on Tuesday in New York.

The actor, 55, was accused by a woman of a sexual abuse incident which took place in New York City a decade ago, with the trial initially set to begin on June 6 with the jury selection process at a federal court.

However, shortly after jurors were to begin assembling, a calendar entry in the official court record said: "TRIAL OFF." It added further: "Reason for cancellation (on consent): the parties have resolved the matter."

The woman who filed the case, who went as Jane Doe up till the trial, alleged that the actor had lured her to his hotel room in 2013 after meeting at a restaurant nearby, which is when the incident took place.

The Oscar-winning actor, for his part and through his lawyers, maintained that the incident was purely consensual, even adding that the woman bragged about it afterwards.

The plaintiff was being represented by famed women's rights attorney Gloria Allred, who hasn't yet released a comment on the situation. The star's lawyers are yet to release a comment as well.

The actor has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 30 women since 2019, with the first incident arising in June when he was arrested on charges of misdemeanor forcible touching and sexual abuse after an incident when he allegedly groped a woman at a bar in Times Square.

Several others then came forward with incidents dating back years, such as the one the current trial was based on, which was attributed to the influx of the #MeToo movement sparking a growing awareness in sexual harassment and how to come forward with it.

The actor has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than 30 women

In 2020, the actor was formally charged with three incidents of misdemeanor and third degree sexual abuse, and in 2022, pleaded guilty to forcibly kissing a woman at a New York nightclub in 2018.

He also admitted to two other incidents taking place around the same time which involved other allegations of sexual misconduct.

Although, as part of his plea deal with prosecutors, Gooding was able to avoid any jail time and was able to withdraw his misdemeanor plea in favor of pleading to the lesser harassment violation.

He was able to walk without any significant charges a few months later, only mandated to continue counseling for six months.

In August 2020, Jane Doe came forward with allegations of sexual assault and forcible touching relating back to the incident from 2013.

The influx of the #MeToo movement led to a rise of charges against the actor

The date for the trial was finally set in 2021 as June 6, 2023, although with the settlement deal, it is unclear how other charges against the Boyz n the Hood star will proceed as this civil case comes to a close.
