Italian charmer Silvio Berlusconi introduced to 'bella donna' Michelle Obama

He's known to appreciate the fairer sex.

So it was to be expected that Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi would be pleased by the opportunity to meet the woman regarded as the first lady of charismatic females – Michelle Obama.

On being introduced to the chatelaine of the White House by husband Barack Obama at a dinner in the US, the Italian leader couldn't have looked more delighted.

Mr Berlusconi - currently in the midst of a divorce battle with his wife, former actress Veronica Lario - gave a warm smile and one of his typically expansive gestures.

Hosting the G20 leaders ahead of a summit in Pittsburg, Michelle was on typically elegant form in a summery frock.

She was also showing off her toned arms that have been the subject of so much discussion.

The evening do also gave the first lady a chance to catch up with some of the other friends she's made since Mr Obama came to power.

Gordon Brown's wife Sarah – whom she made a point of seeing for a tete-a-tete while on a private visit to London this summer - gave her a warm hug.

Also attending was Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, who has been supporting her husband France's President Nicolas Sarkozy in the US and meeting up with pals like Queen Rania of Jordan.
