THE TALENTED MR JUDE
In the years that followed Jude made a concerted effort to avoid getting type-cast. He played the pompous Lord Bosie Douglas in Wilde, before becoming a vampire for The Wisdom Of Crocodiles and a drunken thug for Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil.

"It wasn't a conscious choice not to be a movie star," he explains. "It's just that I wanted to play as many parts as I could before I was 30, working with directors whom I would be learning from."

Landing the role of Ivy League dropout Dickie Greenleaf in The Talented Mr Ripley, for which he earned his first Oscar nomination, catapulted him onto a higher level, before prominent supporting roles in the blockbusters Artificial Intelligence and The Road To Perdition further boosted his profile. Having notched up a second Oscar nod for his appearance in Anthony Minghella's Cold Mountain, Jude is now firmly established as one of Hollywood's hottest properties.
