GOING FOR LAUGHS
While Jamie’s first love was music – he won a scholarship to study classical piano at university in San Diego – he soon dropped out of college to try and break into show business. And in 1989, his life changed forever when a girlfriend dared him to take to the stage at an open mike night at an LA comedy club. Focusing mainly on impressions of Eighties icons such as Bill Cosby and Ronald Reagan, Jamie soon revealed himself as a gifted and confident comedy natural.

Around this time the budding comedian decided to adopt the stage handle Jamie Foxx, adding an extra 'x' in tribute to black TV icon Redd Foxx. He chose an androgynous name after noticing that women comics got preference for mike time on open stage nights.

It wasn’t long before the youngster’s combination of raw talent and confidence caught the eye of TV bosses. And by 1991 he was a regular on In Living Color, a hit US comedy series also starring Jim Carrey and a young Jennifer Lopez.
