As his TV reputation grew, Jamie looked to expand his repertoire, but serious acting roles were few and far between. Attempting to parlay his comic skills into big screen opportunities, he signed on for the 1997 comedy Booty Call, which bombed. “It was what I did because I couldn't get work in anything better,” he explained later.

Vowing not to make the same mistake twice, he decided to bide his time. He continued to audition – even competing against Cuba Gooding Jr for a role opposite Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire. But it was not until he was cast as a quarterback in 1999’s Any Given Sunday that people began to take him seriously. While his performance won critical acclaim, further roles only trickled in.

His first collaboration with director Michael Mann, in the 2001 biopic Ali, followed. But because of the poor quality of the scripts he was subsequently offered, Jamie then returned to his comedy roots, hitting the road for a successful stand-up tour, rather than compromise his fledgling reputation as a serious actor.
