British holidaymakers are frequently keen to try to get away from what they perceive as tourist hotspots. The allure of places that offer a combination of crowd-free beaches and quality resorts in a less familiar destination see many Brits book holidays to exotic countries. Whether it is long-haul flights to the Far East, North America, or holidays to Turkey, Egypt or Bulgaria, the British tourist is always willing to try a new holiday experience.
Similarly, for the modern day celebrity, this form of holiday isolation is something that many are happy to pay a high price for. Many top celebs it seems can only relax in an exclusive, private resort, well away from the masses and, perhaps more importantly, the gaze of the camera lens.
Yet, is it possible that in their collective desire to get away from the holiday crowds and the more popular resorts, holidaymakers and celebrities are in danger of missing out on a crucial part of the holiday experience?
There’s a very good reason why many famous, well-attended resorts attract high numbers of visitors – there’s a lot more to it than the availability of cheap alcohol, food, warm sun and fantastic beaches.
A good example of a popular resort that offers a huge amount to any visitor, be they famous or not, is Benidorm. This renowned resort has been a popular destination for those looking for cheap holidays to Spain for many years. Indeed, so synonymous has the town become with the British holidaymaker that the popular television series of the same name, which features the madcap antics of a group of British hotel guests, was recently nominated for a prestigious National Television Award.
Certainly, the zany antics of the Benidorm cast make for hilarious TV viewing and there is little doubt that the popularity of the show has inspired a new generation of British sun-seekers to opt for this famous resort situated on the east coast of Spain, northeast of Alicante.
Indeed, judging by the hysterical laughter that greeted the clips of the show, which were shown at the National Television Awards, it would not be a surprise if some of the famous faces in the audience opted to book their own Benidorm holiday, chiefly to experience this majestic town for themselves!
If they did, they would not be the first celebrities to enjoy the many attractions of the beautiful town on the Costa Blanca. The resort has been a popular getaway for the rich and famous for many years. Hotels in Benidorm have welcomed the likes of Julio Iglesias and Roger Moore, who were believed to be among the resorts most famous visitors during the 60s and 70s.
Many British holidaymakers recount tales of bumping into the likes of former Coronation Street stars Julie Goodyear (Bet Lynch) and Bruce Jones (Les Battersby) or wrestling ace Mick McManus. A vast number of professional footballers from all eras up to the present day spent their holiday time in the town. Emmerdale star Fraser Hines, Hi-De-Hi star Paul Shane and many others from the world of television and sports are frequently spotted by adoring fans.
More recently, in addition to the cast members of Benidorm (which has included the likes of comedians Crissy Rock, Johnny Vegas and Steve Pemberton), other famous faces currently on British TV have been spotted in and around Benidorm.
Gavin and Stacey star James Corden, along with his then actress girlfriend Sheridan Smith were spotted by several holidaymakers in the town a few years back, while star of The Royle Family, Ricky Tomlinson, is thought to be an annual visitor to the town.
Clearly, with many of these top celebrities having plenty of money at their disposal, Benidorm must have an allure that goes beyond it being relatively inexpensive compared to other parts of the world. So what is it about the town that makes it so attractive to both the public and celebrities?
While Benidorm’s most famous attractions may be its beautiful beaches and relatively cheap hotels and bars, there is so much more to the town. The region boasts several outstanding theme parks, which are ideal for families, as well as a wide range of water parks and other attractions that showcase Benidorm’s bounteous natural attractions and innovation.
For example, in the mountains behind the nearby town of Altea, the Algar Falls are a place of outstanding natural beauty; while the nearby Canelobre Caves are an awe-inspiring natural phenomenon that are well worth visiting. This potent combination of virtues makes Benidorm such a popular destination.
So with this in mind, will celebrities be flocking to Benidorm this year? Without doubt, they will, as they have done so for many years previously. Best of all, thanks to the fabulous prices, great hotels and myriad of local attractions, they will not be the only people lucky enough to enjoy the many attractions of this charming, iconic town.
