Last year already seems a long time ago now doesn’t it? We all enjoyed Christmas and New Year’s Eve was a time to welcome 2013 in style. But what does the New Year hold? Two or three months of hard gym work before the resolutions start to die off? A frugal first month of the year before we start spending again? Well if there’s one resolution many of us make, which this year we should all stick to is to see more of the world. If that sounds like the perfect way to spend 2013, now’s the time to start planning with our hottest destinations of 2013.
The end of last year or the beginning of this year may have seen you boarding the ferry to France to ski in one of the top French destinations – and there’s nothing wrong with that, but for skiing this year we’re thinking of something a bit further afield. Russian’s unofficial “summer capital” is set to host the 2014 Winter Olympics, and while the locals may find it a little strange that this “Black Sea Pearl” should host the world’s top winter games, it can’t be argued that when the snow does come, the slopes are fantastic. We think it’s time to get in early and try them out for yourself before the crowds really descend here in 2014.
Wellington, New Zealand
New Zealand is back on the travel agenda for many of us, now Middle Earth is once again on the cinema screen, but in reality we should never ignore this wonderful country. While destinations such as Queenstown in the South Island, or the North Island’s Bay of Islands are always popular amongst backpackers and tourists alike we just can’t ignore the country’s capital. It’s a small beautiful city with many tourist sites, but when it comes to culture Wellington can’t be beaten. Head to the quiet, intimate independent coffee shops and bars on Cuba Street and you’ll start to see why. If you’re lucky you may just catch the country’s hottest band – Fat Freddy’s Drop – playing one of their many hometown gigs. This is what real New Zealand is all about.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
It’s just the home of beautiful people, so it simply has to be on our list of the hottest destinations for 2013. Rio has long been on the bucket list of many of us, but it seems we’re all making the decision to head there now. If you go for carnival, you’ll see the city in its true splendour, but in reality you’ll be amazed at any time of year. Relax on the beach, dance in one of the many night-time hotspots and make your way up to Christ the Redeemer. With the world set to descend on Brazil in 2014 for the World Cup and the Olympics two years later, 2013 could be the time to avoid the crowds. Just remember to get that beach bod before you go and get ready for people watching on the beach – the perfect way to spend a lazy Brazilian day.
